It all started so well, too, there was Bennett, looking impotent, sorry, important, waving his crumpled 'dossier' on total strangers around outside New Scotland Yard, pretending he was going there....when it was actually Belgravia nick he was off to.
The lads there were none too pleased to see him, and I doubt if they were too impressed when they read his racist remarks about them when he reported to the other Hounders.
They will be even less impressed today, now they have the evidence right in front of them that Bennett is a liar and a fantasist.
What he claimed to the Met:
My understanding is that the [Scotland Yard Madeleine Mc Cann Review Team] would welcome any evidence that would assist with the enquiry. You state that you have a first hand information from an insider from the McCann's private investigators. This information would obviously be of interest to the team and they would welcome details of this individual to allow them to interview her if she is able to provide relevant evidence. However, information regarding peoples views and suspicions do not constitute evidence. The team are obliged to consider evidence rather than repetition of the myriad of views and beliefs that individuals choose to interpret from the available information.
And there, Gentle Readers, is the giant, whopping, LIE.
Because Bennett's Source in Team McCann made a claim about a law group that was physically impossible.
On being caught out telling this whopper, the Pinnochio of Harlow starting wriggling and trying to blame it on the Sauce:

It seems that Control Risks Group may have been involved. Or Leicestershire Police. Or others who may have had connections to one or other of the security services. All I will add to that is that (1) other information given to us confidentially by this source has been confirmed and we are fully satisfied that the source is authentic and (2) that the source has both first-hand knowledge of certain events and also second-hand knowledge. The information about who helped Jane Tanner with her statements is second-hand rather than first-hand.
In truth, it wasn't 'first hand information' at all; it was some bit of conjured-up tittle tattle and hearsay, from someone who didn't even know if she was talking about IFLG, the police, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., or the Brownies.
If Bennett is lucky, and the Met are feeling benign, they will write him and all his Hounders off as lunatics.
If they aren't, they'll charge him.
But don't you just love the irony, Gentle Readers?
